Humanoid Robot - Robonaut 2 all set to be a part of the shuttle trip
October 27th, 2010 - 8:45 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, Oct 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) NASA is set to blast its space shuttle Discovery into space on November 1 this year and on board the spacecraft will be the humanoid robot, Robonaut 2.
The robot, which is also called R2, will help astronauts at the International Space Station. Advanced Robotics developed the R2 in partnership with NASA and General Motors.
The R2 is equipped with advanced control, vision and sensor technologies.
The vice president of GM’s Global Research and Development, Alan Taub indicated that “One of GM’s core goals is to lead in advanced technology and quality” further adding that “This partnership and the development of R2 are providing us with innovative technologies that will help us achieve these goals in both our future products and plants”.
This is not the first partnership between GM and NASA in space exploratory mission. GM and NASA partnered to develop the first vehicle that was used in space called the Lunar Rover Vehicle. GM also played a vital role in developing the navigation systems of the Apollo missions in the 1960s.
GM hopes the latest technology in R2 will help them in the design of future cars.
Taub confirmed this with the statement that, “We envision the R2 technology transfer will enable GM to build better, safer, higher quality vehicles in a more flexible, more competitive and safer manufacturing environment”.
