Here comes the high speed superbus
September 22nd, 2010 - 1:47 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 22 (IANS) A `superbus’ that resembles a futuristic stretch-limousine and capable of travelling at a speed of 155 mph is on its way. The seating is like that of a business class cabin of an aircraft.
Though it is as long as a conventional bus, it’s not taller than a four-wheel drive sports utility vehicle.
The new bus, which can carry 23 passengers, is being billed as a “future vision of sustainable public transport”, Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
Lightweight carbon has been used to build the bus that will be powered by four electric motors. On board radar will avoid collisions.
The designers said that the accommodation will be similar to that in business class cabin of an aircraft.
The idea is to run the superbus on dedicated lanes built in residential areas. It can join the rest of the traffic when it comes closer to the city centre.
It has been put through its paces at Lelystad in the Netherlands, but has only reached a top speed of 50mph. The prototype of the superbus is to be unveiled in Germany by Delft University of Technology.
The Dutch Government has spent 7.5 million pounds for the programme and it is expected that the new vehicle first enter service in the Netherlands.
