November 21st, 2009 - 10:40 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Nov 21 (IANS) The Haryana government Saturday reiterated its commitment for research on the mythological Saraswati river.
Haryana’s Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav assured all assistance to Saraswati River Research Institute in its efforts to trace the flow of the sacred river.
Addressing researchers at a function in Kurukshetra, 100 km from here, Yadav pointed out that the mention of the sacred Saraswati river comes in the Vedas.
Mythology has it that the Vedas were written on the banks of the sacred river which is believed to be flowing underground now.
The minister said that the Dadupur-Nalvi canal would immensely help in infusing in “new life” in this river.
Yadav thanked people for supporting the research on tracing the river’s course and attempts to revive its flow.
“When the course of the river was being traced, all those farmers whose land fell in the
course of the river voluntarily handed it over to the administration,” he pointed out.
The minister appreciated the efforts of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) in tracing the course of the sacred river.
“When these scientists were looking for oil near Jaisalmer (in Rajasthan), they found a fast flowing water course. The scientists of the research institute have also found flow of water near Kalayat (in southern Haryana),” Yadav pointed out.
