Haryana scientists develop milk-testing kit
August 6th, 2010 - 5:08 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 6 (IANS) An innovative ‘milk urea detection kit’ has been developed by the scientists of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU) in Haryana’s Hisar town, the university’s vice chancellor K.S. Khokhar announced Friday.
Khokhar said that with this kit, milk could be checked for the presence of urea in it - even at home.
He said that for testing milk, a drop of the chemical prepared by the scientists of the university would have to be put on a filter paper. On putting a drop of milk on it, the urea containing milk would develop a yellow ring around the drop of the chemical. But in case of the milk being pure, the pink colour of the chemical would not undergo any change.
Khokhar said that to facilitate the users of the test, the kit has been developed in two sizes. The kit containing material for 10 samples costs Rs.30 while the kit containing material for 30 samples costs Rs.100.
“The kit would be very useful even for large dairies. The university has made the kit available for sale to the public,” he added.
