indonesia-006July 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In a recent development, a large sized undersea volcano has been discovered off Indonesia coast. It was discovered by chance by a team that was conducting an expedition in the region. Even though the volcano is 10000-feet tall from the bottom of the ocean, it remains below the water surface. The researchers who discovered the volcano were using a robotic vehicle and powerful sonar system to explore the terrain near Sulawesi Island. They wanted to study the less known marine ecosystem of the place. It was a joint expedition headed by Indonesian and US researchers. The chief U.S. scientist of the expedition Jim Holden said the volcano is really gigantic in size.

The discovery has made the expedition team excited. The expedition is still in progress and will be continued till the mid of the next month. The volcano is not active as the researchers are assuming. They did not go near the volcano and expect that after the expedition is over they will be able to learn more about its state and history. The discovery has created sensation among the scientists who were not aware of the existence of a volcano in the region. However, Indonesia has a number of volcanoes and the region is seismically active.

The expedition will also reveal a lot of hitherto unknown data about the flora and fauna of the coastal region as the researchers are thinking. The ecosystem of the region is rich and the research will help in protecting the marine life in future. The footage of the volcano are going to be made available online shortly.
