fire64July 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists have detected a giant asteroid making its journey towards our planet. However there is still no reason to worry as it has been reported that the asteroid may take more than a couple of years from now to reach the earth. Researchers in Spain have further assured the common man that it is unlikely that the giant asteroid will hit against the earth at all.

Mara Eugenia Sansaturio, a researcher from the Universidad de Valladolid and the co-author of the new study says that the giant asteroid which has been named the (101955) 1999 RQ36 has a probability of one in thousand times to brush against the earth and even if it does, then the attack will definitely take place in the year 2182, else it will not. The study regarding the movements and path followed by the asteroid has been detailed in the Icarus, a science journal published by the Universidad de Valladolid.

Though the researchers from Spain have labeled the possibility of an attack by the asteroid as negligent, NASA has not done so. In a statement released by NASA on its official website, the scientists have referred to the approaching asteroid as a “potentially hazardous asteroid” or a PHA. This makes the (101955) 1999 RQ36 one among the 1,140 other PHAs that are now circling the space. The Spanish researchers have announced that the giant asteroid was first spotted in space in the year 1999. According to reports the asteroid measures at 560 meters in diameter and NASA says that if the asteroid comes close to the earth’s orbit, it may bring with it threatening results for our planet.
