Geologists in Ethiopia Say Africa is Witnessing The ‘Birth of a New Ocean’
June 29th, 2010 - 2:42 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJune 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to reports from geologists who are working in the Afar regions of Ethiopia, the ocean will eventually split the continent of Africa, and form a new ocean, although it will take approximately 10 million years.
Tim Wright, who is the lead researcher which is presenting the discovery to the Royal Society’s Summer Exhibition stated that the events unfolding are “truly incredible”. The international team which is being led by Dr Wright have noticed amazing changes that have taken place in the Afar region since 2005. In this are, the earth is literally cracking open beneath their feet.
Back in 2005, a stretch of land which measured 60km cracked open to become over eight meters wide in just a ten day period of time. There is hot, molten rock bubbling up to the surface to create the fissure. Since these underground eruptions are going to continue to occur , eventually the horn of Africa will break away and the new ocean will form.
“Eventually this will drift apart,” Dr Wright told the ‘BBC’. “The sea will flood in and will start to create this new ocean. “It will pull apart, sink down deeper and deeper and eventually… parts of southern Ethiopia, Somalia will drift off, create a new island, and we’ll have a smaller Africa and a very big island that floats out into the Indian Ocean.” An example can be seen in the video embedded below.
