Dec.14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Stargazers were in for a treat on Sunday night as the Geminid meteor shower showcased its spectacles that left the people watching it completely spellbound. Speculations were running high regarding the meteor shower as it was presumed that during the intertwining night between December 13 and December 14, the meteor shower is going to be at its best. However, the meteor shower made its presence felt since early Sunday evening, which turned out to be a spectacular visual wonder for all the viewers.
At the same time, at areas where clear skies prevailed, people were able to view the meteor shower even without the help of any equipment. This was possible as NASA had reported earlier that in every minute, one and a half meteor would be visible to the stargazers. Moreover, as the Geminid meteor shower showcased itself along with a new moon, skies displayed appropriate conditions, which made the spectacles all the more clear for the viewers.
Meanwhile, the Geminid meteor shower is an amalgamation of shooting stars that emerge from the constellation known as Gemini, from which it derives its name. The shower is the result of an object known as 3200 Phaethon, which is presumed to be an extinct comet. According to NASA, the Geminid meteor shower is of comparatively recent origin, with its first appearance dating back to 19th century. Moreover, it has also been emphasized that the shower is gradually gaining immense strength and chances are high that the shower is going to more intense in the upcoming years. The main reason for this is because of gravitational pull administered by the planet Jupiter.
