Washington DC, Jun 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Federal Aviation Administration in the United States has approved a hybrid car, that is capable of flying and soon it seems that it would take to the skies.
The car, which is manufactured by Terrafugia, is called Transition Roadable Aircraft. The FAA gave the initial approval on exemption for all the crafts, that have the weight of 650 kg or less.
However because it is also a car, it must get another approval. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) must also give the vehicle the go ahead to be able to ply the roads. The FMVSS would deal the safety issues of the vehicle such as airbags, the vehicle suspension and energy absorption and other protective and safety measures of a car.
The vehicle is powered by a massive Rotax 912S engine. It can accelerate to 115 mph on the road and the same speed in the air as well. The Transition just takes 30 seconds to transform from a plane to a car and vice versa. It is expected to be available for sale from 2011. The initial price of the vehicle has been estimated at $194,000.
