motor-less Venice, July 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Engineers in Italy are attempting something that is very ambitious. They have planned a 13,000 kilometers test drive for their driverless vehicle.

The driverless vehicle would make a trip from Italy to China and this eventful trip would take 3 months. The vehicle, which was launched on Tuesday, is fitted with cameras and laser scanners that would combine to help the car avoid blocks and obstacles.

There will be two driverless vehicles involved in the trip. Though there will be no driver during the trip, two engineers will stay in the van and monitor the health of the vehicle during the trip and take control of the vehicle, if anything goes contrary to scheduled plans.

There will also be a normally driven van on the trip. The vans will lead the driverless vans through the routes that it should take during the trip. “What we are trying to do is stress our systems and see if they can work in a real environment, with real weather, real traffic and crazy people who cross the road in front of you and a vehicle that cuts you off,” according to project leader Alberto Broggi.

Engineers of the car say they do not expect the vehicles to make the trip on 100% driverless mode. The engineers hope that if the trip is successful, it will be a major breakthrough in their quest to develop driverless vehicles on commercial scale.
