Earthquake moved California City - Calexico by 31 inches
June 28th, 2010 - 9:03 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattCalexico, Jun 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Californian City – Calexico was moved by 31 inches, after the powerful earthquake on the 4th of April.
The new border of the city was found after NASA radar images were retrieved. The quake had measured 7.2 in magnitude on the Richter scale.
Scientists say the planet is remade every time, when an earthquake alters the earth’s structure. Chile’s massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake earlier this year, moved the town of Concepcion by at least 3 meters to the west. The quake also shortened the length of the day by 1.26 microseconds. The Chile quake was the fifth biggest quake in the history of the world.
NASA used special aircraft to record how the earthquake affected the earth’s surface. The jet used is called Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar or UAVSAR. NASA developed the special plane.
“UAVSAR’s unprecedented resolution is allowing scientists to see fine details of the Baja earthquake’s fault system activated by the main quake and its aftershocks,” according to JPL’s Scott Hensley, who is UAVSAR principal investigator at JPL.
The jet’s camera has a very good resolution, which gives scientists greater details of the images. The quake caused major damage when it struck. There have been several aftershocks since the quake. NASA has been monitoring the San Andreas fault since 2009 using the radar system.
