Dr. Vladimir Mironov wants to grow meat in labs
February 1st, 2011 - 2:42 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, Jan 31 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A scientist is determined to come up with something that most US agencies are running away from.
Dr. Vladimir Mironov aims to grow meat in the lab. The ambitious project according to the 56-year-old scientist will help to address future food crisis. The major obstacle for Dr. Mironov however is the fact that no federal agency is willing to fund the research.
After being turned down by the Food and Drugs Administration and the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Mironov said that, “It’s classic disruptive technology,” Mironov said. “Bringing any new technology on the market, average, costs $1 billion. We don’t even have $1 million.”
The acceptance of meat grown in the lab will not be easy. Already there are issues with GM foods. A visiting scholar from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said technology and food have been used together to produce several foods for years. He named yoghurt, beer and wine as some foods that are produced this way.
Dr. Mironov believes if the project becomes a success, several meats can be grown from such a way.
Dr. Mironov says several countries are involved in the project.
