Delhi Metro engineers repair storm water drain
July 5th, 2009 - 6:24 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has set right a damaged storm water drain at an under-construction Metro site in south Delhi area and opened the road to commuters Sunday.
Though the drainage plans were not available with civic agencies, the DMRC engineers with skilled expertise managed to repair the drain in record time and diverted the rain water, a DMRC official said.
Public works department (PWD) and the capital’s civic agencies are responsible for repair and maintenance of storm water drains.
The 60-year-old-drain located beneath Aurobindo Marg - on the way to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi - had ruptured due to backflow of rainwater and the water had further leaked onto the main road, blocking vehicular movement.
“The DMRC successfully repaired the storm water barrel below the Aurobindo Marg near Green Park and restored the road in just a month,” DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said in a statement, calling the repair an “engineering feat”.
The stretch was earlier closed to commuters on June 2 following leakages and depressions caused in the road. “This corridor has been fully opened for the traffic from today (Sunday),” he said.
The work at the site was so tricky and difficult that the DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan personally inspected the site “at least six times to give technical directions to the Metro engineers working there”.
Around 250 workers and 12 engineers worked round the clock for the restoration work.
The under-construction Metro station at Green Park falls on the Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar-Gurgaon line, which is slated to be operational by next year.
