Darwin may have been wrong according to the new evolution theory of Biology Letters
August 25th, 2010 - 8:24 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, Aug 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Darwin’s famous theory on evolution has been doubted by a new study that was published in the journal Biology Letters.
The study, which was co-authored by Michael Benton and carried out by the University of Bristol, concluded that it was “living space” rather than “competition” that is the main driving force for evolution.
In the famous theory of Darwin on evolution, Darwin maintained that it was “competition” that was the main driving force behind evolution. But the new researchers argue that it is not competition but rather living space that drives species to evolve.
The researchers who used fossils to study evolution patterns over hundreds of millions of years concluded that it was the availability of space that helped drive evolution. They gave the example that when some organisms developed the ability to fly, it opened a whole new opportunities for the species to occupy.
“The new study proposes that really big evolutionary changes happen when animals move into empty areas of living space, not occupied by other animals,” according to BBC News.
But supporters of Darwin’s theory say that the conclusion of the recent study is “problematic”. They argue that if species were looking for a new space to move, it can only mean that they are moving on to avoid competition.
