Coffee and Aspirin is “Best Hangover Cure” in Rats
January 21st, 2011 - 1:58 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJan 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to scientists, the best cure for a hangover is not “hair of the dog” as suggested before, which means that a person should drink a small amount of whatever made them sick. New research suggests that, at least in lab rats, the best cure for a hangover is aspirin and caffeine. Yes, this means that in a lab somewhere, scientist worked hard at getting rats drunk on “small amounts” of ethanol, and then testing different “hangover remedies” to see which one seemed to work the best.
Actually, it was a team of scientists from the Thomas Jefferson University located in Philadelphia who induced the headaches and overall sick feeling in the rats by giving them alcohol. They then began to vary the doses of caffeine and anti inflammatory medications in order to see which ones offered the most relief for the poor, hungover rats.
According to Professor Michael Oshinsky, the caffeine intake did not cause the rats to become dehydrated, as was suspected. This evidence would seem to override those who say that coffee and caffeine should not be used to cure hangovers.
