Chinese think China-US ties important, survey shows
January 17th, 2011 - 1:19 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 17 (IANS) Around 90 percent of the Chinese consider China-US ties important, a survey has revealed.The survey, conducted by the China Daily newspaper and the Horizon Research Consultancy Group, also showed that 54.3 percent of respondents think it is very important for China to maintain good relations with the US.
Nearly 60 percent think the ties will stay stable while 23.8 percent think it will get better and 10 percent think it will worsen.
The Chinese public will pay great attention to Chinese President Hu Jintao’s Jan 18-21 visit to the US, Xinhua reported.
Around 60 percent of respondents think summits between Chinese and US leaders are an effective way to solve bilateral issues and promote development.
The respondents think the topics most likely to be discussed during the two leaders’ meeting will be the Korean Peninsula situation, the Taiwan issue and the bilateral trade imbalance.
On China-US economic and trade relations, around 70 percent of respondents think China and the US are both competitors and partners.
The impression US people give to the Chinese public is mainly positive, according to the survey. Of the respondents, 20 percent think US people are “independent”, 13.4 percent think they are “creative”, and 6.9 percent think they are “confident”.
The 1,443-respondent survey was conducted in seven major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, from Dec 20-30 last year.
