This space craft exploded only 73 seconds after it was launched, and reached up to 14,000 meters (46,000ft) above the ground level. Today marks the 25th anniversary of this disastrous accident and the NASA officials at the Florida’s Kennedy Space Center and Johnson Space Center, have planned to recall this black day in the history of space science.

The anniversary will be observed at the Space Mirror Memorial, which is a granite hall that was constructed at the Kennedy Space Center, in the memory of those astronauts who sacrificed their lives in the mission. The hall bears the names of 24 astronauts, who lost their lives on the tragic day. The organizers have invited June Scobee Rodgers, the widow of late Dick Scobee, who was the commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger, and lost his life along with six other commanders in the space craft. June Scobee Rodgers will be one of the speakers at the out door ceremony. Milt Heflin, the associate director-technical at Johnson Space Center, was not assigned with the Space Shuttle Challenger mission. However, he still thinks that every one, including him, should have paid more attention to the details to detect its technical faults. He added that he should have had the “hungriness to sort through what happened”.

The 25th anniversary of this disastrous accident was also observed by the Johnson Space Center, where the researchers gathered to pay a tribute to these martyrs. Sandy Anderson, the widow of Michael Anderson, an astronaut of Space Shuttle Columbia and Evelyn Husband-Thomas, the widow of commander Rick Husband, paid an ode to their late husbands, by laying wreath at the Astronaut Memorial Grove in Johnson Space Center.
