April 5th, 2010 - 7:59 pm ICT by IANSBangalore, April 5 (IANS) A eco-friendly light-emitting diode (LED) study lamp, designed and produced by consumer durables company BPL, has won the Red Dot product design award in Germany, the company said Monday.
The only Indian product to win the coveted award, BPL Studylite was chosen from 4,252 entries of 1,635 firms from 57 countries.
The award will be presented to the Bangalore-based BPL at Essen in Germany July 5 in recognition of “the product’s innovation, functionality, quality, ergonomics, durability and symbolic and emotional content”, the company said in a statement here.
“The BPL StudyLite was designed to address the most common and widespread problem faced by millions across India and other developing countries on account of power outages, which interrupt their lives,” BPL chairman and managing director Ajit G. Nambiar said.
The energy efficient product was deployed at the Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital in the city to verify how much of lighting is appropriate for the eye.
“The ergonomic design makes the study lamp compact, lightweight and portable. It’s eco-friendly with its solar charging capability and low power consumption,” said Abhijit Bansod of Studio ABD, which collaborated with BPL in designing it.
The lamp is available in the Indian market and is set to reach global markets soon.
