Bangalore, Feb 1 (IANS) Leading chip maker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Tuesday unveiled its latest microprocessor to power computer applications with more features, including graphics.”The new single die design (chip) combines the multi-core central processing unit (CPU) power with 11-capable graphics and a parallel processing engine to bring supercomputer-like performance on desktops, laptops, tablets and all-in-one devices,” AMD India managing director Ravi Swaminathan told reporters here.

Christened AMD fusion family of accelerated processing units (APUs), the new chip platform has a high-definition video acceleration block and a high-speed bus for transmitting data across processors with longer battery life.

“Our technology partners like Sony, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba will roll out their new products on a robust computing platform in India over the next six months with the new chipset for marketing at competitive price points,” Swaminathan said at a demo of the fusion-based systems.

With the parallel processing power of a GPU (graphic processing unit), the chip can also support two-way high-definition video chat over links with even limited bandwidth, adds stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) realism to two-dimensional (2D) content and enables multi-monitor 3D gaming.

“A 90-member team from our research and development team in Hyderabad contributed significantly to the development of the microprocessor, fusion system-on-chips, graphics and media solutions,” Swaminathan said.

The AMD fusion will eliminate the need for consumers to choose between power and performance to experience new computing at different price points.
