Airtel launches 3G services in Congo
October 25th, 2011 - 8:08 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Telecom service provider Airtel Tuesday said it has launched its third generation (3G) mobile telephony service in Congo.
“Today’s launch follows the successful application and issuance of a 3G license by the Republic of Congo. The issuance of the license is a significant move by the Congolese government and a milestone in a region that is set to embrace first world mobile platforms,” the company said in a statement.
“This is the first 3G license issued in central Africa and the second amongst the French-speaking African nations, after Senegal,” it added.
3G capability will allow users to make video calls, watch live TV, send and receive emails and download music from internet enabled devices.
The company also said that this is the latest global HSPSA plus technology with 21 mbps, also being rolled out in Europe and the USA and will benefit large corporates, small or medium businesses and the youth.
Telecommunications is one of the continent’s fastest growing industries with a rapidly expanding cellular phone market that now includes internet access, mobile banking and mobile commerce.
There are currently about 400 million mobile subscribers in Africa, according to data from global management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.
