5,000 cameras to monitor criminals in Haryana
February 1st, 2011 - 7:44 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Feb 1 (IANS) The Haryana government Tuesday announced that it would install at least 5,000 cameras in major cities across the state to monitor activities of criminals, a senior official said here.Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said the cameras were being installed by the Haryana government to modernise and enhance its intelligence gathering capability and surveillance system in eight cities of the state.
These cities include Gurgaon, Faridabad, Sonepat, Yamunanagar, Rohtak, Karnal, Panipat and Panchkula.
“Under this surveillance system 5,000 cameras would be installed at major road junctions, Uttar Pradesh-Haryana border, shopping malls and crowded places to monitor the movement of criminals,” Gulati said after chairing a meeting of the state-level empowered committee to monitor implementation of the Rs.880 million (Rs.88 crore) ‘Modernization of Police Force Plan 2011-12′ here Tuesday.
“A fibre-net would be laid in Gurgaon and Faridabad to install surveillance system to enhance the surveillance in shopping malls, main market, major traffic points and escape routes in these two cities. The surveillance system will have the capability to give warning about unidentified objects in the shopping malls and crowded places,” Gulati said.
The system would become functional within the next six months, she added.
The surveillance system will also include advance traffic regulation system, face recognition system and automatic number plates reading system to track wanted vehicles and movements of criminals in these two cities.
“The system would also be used to monitor violent mob activities, regulation of big public meetings and safe and secure movement of VIPs,” a spokesman said here.
