Shri Azad to inaugurate conference of Leprologist on Gandhi Jayanti
October 2nd, 2009 - 12:49 am ICT by adminNew Delhi, Oct 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) This 27th Biennial Conference of Indian Association of Leprologist (IAL) is being organized in Delhi by the department of Dermatology, STD and Leprosy of PGIMER., Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on this auspicious day “Gandhi Jayanti Day”, Mahatama Gandhi had a life long interest in leprosy and in relieving the plight of leprosy patients. His empathy for a leprosy patients was remarkable.
The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad will inaugurate this national event in the PGIMER auditorium tomorrow. The Union Health Minister of State, Shri Dinesh Trivedi, Union Health Minister of State, Shri Gandhiselvan are the guests of honour. DGHS Dr. R.K. Srivastava, Dr. V.M. Katoch, Secretary, Department of Health Research and DG, ICMR, Prof. N.C. Chaturvedi, the Director PGIMER and Dr. R.M.L. Hospital are the special invitees.
Dr. H.K. Kar, the President of Indian Association of Leprologists and the Organizing Chairperson of the Conference and Dr. V. Dhir, the organizing secretary have informed that about 500 delegates are attending this conference from all states of the country and abroad. They include National Leprosy Eradication Programme managers from almost all states and union territories, dermatologists, neurologists, public health specialists, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, microbiologists, immunologists, pathologists, eye surgeons, Medical rehabilitation specialists, medical officers, social scientists, and grass route leprosy workers. The theme of the conference is kept as “Recent advances in Leprosy”. DGHS, ICMR, DST, CSIR, ILEP, HKNS, NOVARTIS, GSK etc are the key partners of this conference.
The eminent leprologists from India and abroad are assembled here to exchange their views, research findings and new ideas with all participants with an ultimate goal of making India and the whole world free from leprosy. That was the dream of Mahatama Gandhi.
