Mumbai, March 11 (IANS) Police detained around 30 activists of the Yuva Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) after they created a ruckus in Chinai College here Friday morning, an official said.
The Yuva Sena, headed by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s grandson, Aditya, and MNS, headed by Thackeray’s nephew Raj Thackeray, were protesting the decision of the college management debarring around 119 students from appearing for internal examinations for lack of sufficient attendance.
The protesting activists, including Shiv Sena legislator Abhijit Adsul, trooped inside the college premises in Andheri east and started throwing around papers, furniture and fittings, prompting the college to summon the police.
Even as the college authorities decided to cancel the examinations scheduled for Friday, the police arrived and whisked away the protesters, the official said.
Several affected students from the first, second and third year B.Com. stream also raised slogans against the college management and alleged that they were being victimised as the college wanted to sell off the prime piece of land for a shopping mall and hence trying to reduce the number of students.
The college has stuck to its stand and said it was awaiting the report of a three-member enquiry committee of academicians S.T. Gadade, Chaitali Chakraborti and Suhasini Sant which has been submitted to the University of Mumbai.
According to the rules, students who record attendance below 50 percent are not eligible to write examinations, and the affected students, some who had zero attendance, were earlier suspended by the Chinai College management.
