Youth immolates over Trinamool ‘fraud’, party denies role (Lead)

Kolkata, March 6 (IANS) A youth, who allegedly failed to get a railway job as promised by some Trinamool Congress leaders, set himself on fire outside Railway Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee’s residence here Sunday. He was admitted to hospital with 90 percent burns, police said. The party has denied any role in the incident.
“Prasun Dutta, a resident of Bansberia in Hooghly district, had come near the railway minister’s residence on Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat. Suddenly, he set himself on fire and then jumped into the Tollygunge canal that runs past the house,” said city police’s Deputy Commissioner (South) Supratim Sarkar said.
“Locals rushed to his rescue and immediately shifted him to M.R. Bangur hospital with 90 percent burn injuries,” said Sarkar. Prasun’s family later shifted him to a private nursing home.
Family members of the youth claimed that he was assured a railway job by some Trinamool Congress leaders, but they did not keep their promise.
The opposition party denied the allegations levelled by the victim’s family.
According to witnesses, Prasun came to Banerjee’s house claiming to be a Trinamool Congress supporter and sought an appointment with her.
All off a sudden, he poured petrol on his body and set himself on fire. Immediately thereafter, he jumped in the Tollygunge canal.
The victim’s elder brother Proloy Dutta said: “Prasun was promised employment by some Trinamool Congress leaders of Hooghly. After he realised that they had made false promises, he came to meet Banerjee to plead for a job.”
Trinamool Congress heavyweight and opposition leader in West Bengal assembly Partha Chatterjee denied involvement of any party leader in the incident and termed the victim as “mentally depressed”.
“There is no involvement or connection of any Trinamool leader. The boy is mentally depressed. This incident could have happened in front of anybody’s house. This incident has no relation with politics,” Chatterjee said.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Jawed Shamim said the police were investigating the case.
