Youth Congress seeks probe into minister’s son’s marriage partyApril 18th, 2008 - 4:32 pm ICT by admin
Thiruvananthapuram, April 18 (IANS) The Youth Congress here Friday called for a probe by the central government into the state home minister’s son’s marriage reception which was allegedly attended by members of the underworld and known criminals. The marriage-eve party for state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s son took place on April 12 and it was alleged that people from the underworld and known criminals attended the reception.
“A lot of allegations have surfaced about the people who attended the party held here at a private club. Despite all the news of those who attended, we demand that since Balakrishnan is silent (on the issue), a federal probe has to be ordered,” state Youth Congress President T. Siddiq told reporters.
“What is more surprising is that the Democratic Youth Federation of India (the youth wing of the state’s ruling Communist Party of India - Marxist) who do a lot of moral policing is silent. Even Prakash Karat, who speaks often against ostentatious marriages, is silent,” said Siddiq.
The issue surfaced early this week when the Kerala unit of the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that a businessmen embroiled in a controversial land deal had hosted the marriage reception.
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha President K. Surendran alleged that businessman Savy Mano Mathew, reportedly involved in a controversial Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) land deal, had hosted the April 12 reception. Surendran also alleged that people from the underworld and known criminals attended the reception.
When asked about this Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan voiced his displeasure, saying that indulgence in luxury by Left members cannot be tolerated.
Balakrishnan’s stock had risen when he was elected to the party politburo at the CPI-M party congress last month. A party document adopted in the congress categorically asked party members to refrain from ostentatious marriages.
