Bangalore, Oct 31 (IANS) Another dubious distinction piles on former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, arrested in two corruption cases. He will be the first former chief minister of the state to spend time in jail as Karnataka celebrates its formation day Tuesday.
He has already become the first former Karnataka chief minister to be jailed in corruption cases.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s jail stay has extended to the third week as the high court Monday adjourned hearing on his bail plea to Nov 2.
He was arrested Oct 15 and has been staying in Bangalore’s central prison in the eastern suburb of Parappana Agrahara since Oct 19 after spending three days in two hospitals.
Every Nov 1 is a general holiday as it is celebrated as “Rajyothsava Day”. That day in 1956 several Indian states were reorganized on the basis of language.
Large Kannada-speaking areas which were part of the neighbouring states were merged with then Mysore.
Mysore was renamed Karnataka in 1972.
The main function with cultural programmes is held in Bangalore with the chief minister presiding.
Yeddyurappa quit July 31 after the then Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde recommended his trial for corruption in illegal mining scam.
However, Yeddyurappa has been jailed in two different corruption cases filed against him by two Bangalore advocates.
D.V. Sadananda Gowda succeeded him Aug 4.
