World comrades meet in Delhi to fight imperialism
November 21st, 2009 - 3:20 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS) Their fight for an egalitarian society may still be a distant dream but communist parties from 48 countries meeting in the Indian capital say they are committed to fight the capitalist market economy and imperialism.
At least 87 participants from 58 communist parties of the world are in Delhi for the 11th international meeting jointly hosted by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Communist Party of India. The meet began Friday.
The participants who harbour the same ideology and nurse a common hatred for imperialist forces also include those from countries in conflict with each other. For example, Fawaz and Faten Kamal Ghattas from the Palestine Communist Party and the Communist Party of Israel respectively; Oscar Martinez Cordoves from the Communist Party of Cuba and Scott Marshall from the Communist Party of the US are part of the three-day deliberation.
Other participants have come in from Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Argentina and Mexico.
What unites them is their urge to “intensify popular struggles and expand solidarities in the wake of current world capitalist crisis”, say organisers.
“This is the main direction that emerged from discussions on the inaugural day (Friday) of the conclave,” a CPI-M press statement said.
CPI-M polit bureau member Sitaram Yechury said the main theme of the meeting was the “international capitalist crisis, the workers and people’s struggle, the alternatives and the role of the communist and working class movement”.
CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat and CPI general secretary A.B Bardhan were also present.
