Ranchi, Sep 7 (IANS) Three months after the collapse of their earlier coalition government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) have once again joined hands in Jharkhand and staked claim Tuesday to form the government, with Arjun Munda to be chief minister.
BJP legislature party leader, Arjun Munda, accompanied by state party president Raghubar Das, JMM legislature party leader Hemant Soren and All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) legislature party leader Sudesh Mahto met Governor M.O.H. Farook around 1.30 p.m. and staked claim to form the government.
Munda produced a list of 45 legislators supporting him in a house of 81.
“We have handed over a letter of support to form the government under the leadership of Arjun Munda of BJP. The letter of support includes JMM, the AJSU, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and two independents. The governor has assured to take a decision soon on it,” Sudesh Mahto, AJSU president, told reporters.
The Jharkhand governor, according to sources, is taking the opinion of legal experts on the issue.
In the 81-member assembly, the BJP and JMM have 18 seats each, the AJSU has five seats and the JD-U two legislators. Two independents, Chamra Linda and Videsh Singh, have also extended support to the BJP.
Earlier, the BJP elected Arjun Munda as its legislature party leader after Raghubar Das resigned from the post. After his election, Munda along with Raghubar Das went to meet JMM chief Shibu Soren at his residence in Morabadi of Ranchi. “I have given my blessings to Munda to form the government,” Soren told reporters.
From Soren’s residence, the BJP, JMM, AJSU, JD-U and two independent legislators went to the Governor House to stake their claim.
This is the second time that the BJP and JMM have come together to form the government in Jharkhand in less than 10 months.
Assembly polls were held in November and December last year and Shibu Soren became chief minister on Dec 30. However, Soren had to quit May 30 after the BJP withdrew support in protest against his voting in favour of the Congress in April against the BJP-sponsored cut motion in parliament.
The state was put under President’s rule in June.
