William Jefferson Sentenced To 20 Years Of Imprisonment
August 6th, 2009 - 7:38 pm ICT by GD
A former U.S. Congressman William Jefferson was given a temporary free bond by the judge T.S.Ellis but is liable to receive twenty years of rigorous imprisonment as he has been convicted of taking bribes. His chief lawyer Robert Trout said Jefferson would soon appeal in court. The trial prevailed for eight weeks in court.
The Federal Bureau Of Investigation had some trouble initially tackling the unconstitutional interruptions into the congressman’s activities. They started their raids in May 2006 and were successful in confirming their doubts when they found $90000 in an aluminum foil in the freezer of Jefferson’s home. This fund was found in August 2005 and is said to have probably come from a Kentucky businessman and was to be used to bribe a Nigerian official.
The convictions were traced from Jefferson’s so called business pursuits in Nigeria which were not “official acts”. There were also ventures in Equatorial Guinea and Ghana which were for personal benefits.
The tragic course of the fall of this Lousiana politician is ironic as he was a lawyer himself from Harvard. He had served as many as nine terms from the period of 1991 to 2009 in the House Of Representatives. He is claimed to have received less than at least $400000 in this bribe case and convicted for laundering.
House speaker Dennis Hastert directed that Jefferson co-operate with the F.B.I. and the 62 year old raised a voice in the federal court.
He is also accused of having “surreptitiously removed ” evidence.
This is the “first ever raid on a congressional office” in Washington done by the F.B.I.
