Mar 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The wife and daughter of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid were both seriously injured on Thursday when the minivan they were traveling in was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. According to authorities, the accident occurred on an interstate in Virginia.

Reid’s wife, Landra, who is 69 years old, suffered a broken back, nose, and neck in the accident, According to Read’s spokesman, Jim Manley. She is listed in serious condition at the Inova Hospital in Falls Church VA, but she is not expected to need any surgeries.

Their daughter, Lana Barringer, who is 49 years old was expected to be released form the hospital Thursday night after a neck injury and facial lacerations. Both women were conscious, able to feel their arms and legs, and neither of them had life threatening injuries, according to the doctors.

The Virginia State Police told reporters that the two women were traveling north on I-95 in Fairfax County, in a Honda Odyssey. The traffic was starting ans stopping repeatedly, when suddenly they were hit from behind by a tractor trailer which was fully loaded with rolls of plastic. The force of the impact pushed their car into the car in front of them, which in turn slammed into a car in the adjacent lane. The other two drivers were also taken to nearby hospitals, but no one had life threatening injuries. Everyone involved was wearing a seat-belt.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Alan Snader, 59 years old was charged with reckless driving. He did not sustain any injuries.

Although the Democratic Senate Majority leader did visit his wife and daughter in the hospital when he heard of the accident, he later had to leave, so that he could return to Capital Hill for a meeting with the White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanual and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in efforts to get the Health Care Reform Bill passed.
