Who runs Al Qaeda barely matters: US (Lead)
June 17th, 2011 - 1:22 pm ICT by IANSWashington, June 17 (IANS) It hardly matters who runs Al Qaeda, the US said, after Ayman al-Zawahiri took charge of the terrorist group following the killing of Osama bin Laden.
US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said: “What I’d like to say today is, frankly, it barely matters who runs Al Qaeda.
“Because Al Qaeda is a bankrupt ideology. If you look around the world, the peace movements for change have done far more for Muslim people than Al Qaeda has ever produced,” she said.
Al Qaeda announced Thursday that Zawahiri, an Egyptian-born 60-year-old physician, would be its new leader. He succeeds Osama, who was killed May 2 by US special commandos in Pakistan.
