West Bengal may be in debt trap by 2014-15: Pranab

Kolkata, April 11 (IANS) West Bengal may be in a debt trap by 2014-15, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Monday, citing a report of the 13th Finance Commission.
“We review the financial situation of every state from time to time. The Finance Commission has said that three states will be in debt trap by 2014-15. West Bengal is on of the three,” he said.
Mukherjee was asked to comment on the Left Front’s allegation that it is a political strategy to corner the Left by terming the state bankrupt.
“The report is available on the website, anyone can see that report. The financial report of the 28 states is available, anybody can see it. I have nothing more to add,” said Mukherjee.
The Trinamool Congress has attacked the Left government by saying that the three decades of Left Front rule have taken the state to the verge of bankruptcy.
The financial debt of the state is also being used as a major weapon against the ruling Marxists in the coming assembly election. The Left says the situation is far more serious in other states but West Bengal is being deliberately targeted.
