Kolkata, May 13 (IANS) Swept away by a Trinamool Congress tsunami, West Bengal’s Left Front leader Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday said the election results were “unexpected”, but accepted the people’s verdict and promised to be a responsible and constructive opposition in the assembly.

In a joint statement, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose said: “The results so far indicate the end of 34 glorious years of Left rule. The result is unexpected. We accept the mandate of the people and will strive to be a responsible and constructive opposition in the assembly.”

The statement also said that the front would identify the cause of the defeat and take definite rectification measures so as to undertake a continuous programme to regain the people’s faith.

The statement also thanked the people who supported the Left Front in “the difficult times”.

“During the 34 years of Left front rule, the state’s common people and poverty stricken sections have earned several rights. The leftists hope that the masses will endeavour to keep intact these rights and honour”.

Through the statement, the CPI-M leaders urged the people to maintain peace and a democratic environment in the state.

The statement read: “In the context of the result, the Left Front urges the people of every locality to maintain peace and order as well as the democratic environment without falling prey to the designs of instigators.”

Urging the workers to work for the society, the statement read: “The party workers must work from grass roots and serve the society. The Left Front leadership is obliged to stay with you all at all times.”
