Kolkata, July 18 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said the West Bengal government should make efforts to restore peace and normalcy in violence-affected Mongolkote region of Burdwan district.
“Many of our party workers have fled Mongolkote and they are now staying outside. It’s a responsibility of the state government to intervene and bring back peace there,” Mukherjee told reporters here.
“The government must ensure a proper law and order situation in Mongolkote so that our party workers could return to their homes soon.”
The minister also condemned the attack on a 14-member Congress delegation that had gone to Dhanyarukhi village in Burdwan district to distribute relief material among party supporters whose houses were burnt after the murder of CPI-M district committee member Falguni Mukherjee.
“Our party leaders were beaten up badly when they’d visited the troubled zone for distributing relief. In reaction to that, we called a 12-hour strike in the state yesterday (Friday),” said Mukherjee, who is also the president of the Congress’ state unit.
