Vulgar language upsets Bangladesh Speaker
March 21st, 2011 - 3:59 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, March 21 (IANS) Use of foul language in Bangladesh parliament by lawmakers has upset its speaker, who wonders if expunging them remains his sole task.
Abdul Hamid Sunday decried the use of vulgarity in the house and said senior parliamentarians should feel embarrassed about colleagues who use indecent words in speeches.
The speaker pulled up the chief whips of both the treasury and opposition benches.
“It is very unfortunate that both sides encourage (offending) lawmakers by thumping desks,” media reports Monday quoted the speaker as saying.
“Every time they use unparliamentary words, I expunge those. But it looks indecent to frequently expunge (words). As if, being the speaker, it is my only duty,” Hamid said.
One of the guilty MPs was Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) member Syeda Asifa Ashrafi Papia, who was urged by the speaker “to speak decently”, The Daily Star said Monday.
If anyone uses unparliamentary or aggressive words, his or her microphone would be switched off, he warned.
