Chennai, Dec 26 (IANS) Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly and DMDK leader A. Vijayakant was arrested Monday along with party legislators and cadres for staging a black flag demonstration against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.
Manmohan Singh, on a two day visit to the state, arrived here Sunday to participate in a series of functions.
The DMDK staged the black flag protest, condemning the centre’s inaction on Mullaperiyar Dam row, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) and the Cauvery water dispute with Karnataka.
Speaking to reporters, Vijayakant charged Manmohan Singh with not focussing on the Mullaperiyar issue and said that state Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa too did not take any steps for solving the problem.
Hearing about Vijayakant’s arrest, DMDK cadres in Madurai, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Tiruchirapalli and Karaikudi held demonstrations and were arrested.
