New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is being treated for a chest infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, is fine and likely to be discharged in the next few days, doctors said Thursday.
“Vajpayee is in the ICU (intensive care unit) and his breathing is normal. He is fine now and is likely to be discharged in the next few days,” said AIIMS Medical Superintendent D.K. Sharma.
The veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader underwent a tracheotomy surgery for smoother airway management on Feb 14. The next day, he was taken off the ventilator.
Tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in the neck to open a direct airway through an incision in the windpipe Feb 13. Vajpayee was admitted to the hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing Feb 3.
