Uttar Pradesh legislator among 13 arrested for vandalism

- Lucknow, Jan 1 (IANS) A legislator of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and 12 of his supporters were arrested for allegedly vandalising a government office in Uttar Pradesh, the police said Thursday.Demanding reservation privileges for Dhangar community members, legislator Anil Chaudhary and his supporters barged inside the collectorate’s office in Mathura district and resorted to vandalism, state’s additional director general of police Brij Lal told reporters here.
After forcibly entering the collectorate, the attackers resorted to stone pelting and damaged the car of a senior district district officer, he added.
Mathura is some 300 km from Lucknow. Chaudhary is a lawmaker from the Sadabad constituency in the Hathras district.
According to the police, marching under the banner of the Akhil Bharatiya Dhangar Samaj Mahasangh, nearly 200 people were involved in the protest, demanding the community be granted the status of a Scheduled Caste.
