Uttar Pradesh gets new top cop - for just a month!
August 31st, 2011 - 4:06 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Aug 31 (IANS) The Uttar Pradesh government has named R.K. Tiwari as the state’s new director general of police (DGP) — for just a month as he is to retire Sep 30.
The decision came late Tuesday night after the retirement of incumbent Karamveer Singh.
Chief Minister Mayawati handpicked Tiwari for the coveted post instead of Atul Gupta, whose name was earlier Tuesday finalised for the job.
Tiwari assumes charge as DGP in addition to his existing appointment as director general of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).
Both Tiwari and Gupta belong to the 1976 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) but the former’s name was initially not considered as he is due to retire Sep 30. On the other hand, Gupta has over two years to go.
