- Lucknow, Oct 26 (IANS) Within hours of Samajwadi Party (SP) general secretary Amar Singh Monday daring Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to proceed against him for alleged financial fraud, the state police have been asked to investigate the case, officials said.
A lawyer has filed a case against Singh in the state’s Kanpur city, charging him with a Rs.500 crore scam in the amalgamation of his companies. The state police referred the case to Kolkata Police as the alleged financial fraud involving the high profile politician was related to multiple companies, registered there.
However, police in Kolkata have sent back the case to the Uttar Pradesh police.
“Now that the Kolkata police have reverted the case back to us, with the remark that we were free to investigate the matter, we have directed the Kanpur police to proceed,” a senior official told IANS.
The case was likely to be referred to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) that was empowered to deal with matters involving fudging of financial books or siphoning of funds between different pocket
companies. However, this needs the approval of the chief minister.
