Use power to ensure debate, Aiyar urges presiding officers

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) Rajya Sabha member Mani Shankar Aiyar Monday urged presiding officers of the two house of parliament to use their “vast powers” to prevent repeated adjournments and ensure that debates take place in the two houses on issues raised by members.
Referring to disruptions of parliament since the winter session began Nov 22 on issues such as price rise and foreign equity in retail trade, Aiyar said Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari should use their powers “to ensure that discussion is kept alive.”
Taking strong exception to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other opposition parties stalling proceedings of parliament over the government’s decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail up to 51 percent, Aiyar said debate should take place inside parliament.
Aiyar, a nominated member of the upper house, accused the BJP of being “fascist” and said some of its members forced repeated adjournments.
No major business has been transacted by the two houses since the winter session began.
