Washington, March 14 (IANS) US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley has resigned over his comment on the army’s treatment of an American soldier suspected of leaking diplomatic cables to whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

Crowley reportedly said at a university in Massachusetts that the treatment of jailed former intelligence analyst Bradley Manning was “ridiculous and counter-productive and stupid”, Xinhua reported.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement Sunday: “It is with regret that I have accepted the resignation of Philip J. Crowley as assistant secretary of state for public affairs.”
