U.S. Senator John McCain calls on congress to expedite seperate sanctions against Iran
June 10th, 2010 - 2:17 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Senator John McCain on Wednesday called on Congress to expedite and finish a stronger sanctions bill against Iran after a United Nations resolution passed, imposing sanctions on the Middle Eastern country.
“The resolution is the lowest common denominator product, which only builds modestly on the three sanctions resolutions that the UN Security Council has already passed,” Senator McCain said. He continued, noting that unlike the previous three resolutions, the vote was not unanimous. “So the claim that Iran’s government is more internationally isolated than before is patently false.” He said that this sends a mixed signal about the resolve of the international community to prevent Iran’s nuclear weapon production capability.
“I call on the Administration, and our friends and allies overseas, to go above and beyond the provisions of today’s Security Council resolution and to impose our own targeted sanctions on the officials, banks, front companies, and industries that sustain the Iranian government’s drive toward a nuclear weapons capability,” the Senator said. “Finally, I call on President Obama to dramatically increase our country’s support for the universal human rights and democratic aspirations of the Iranian people.”
He concluded, saying that the greatest way to affect change in the behavior of Iran is to help Iran’s people “realize their desire for freedom and justice.”
