actWashington, Dec 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The U.S. House took a landmark decision on Wednesday as it passed the Dream Act would provide a way to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the country. The passage of the youth immigration bill which continues to remain a bone of contention in the political circle, by the House implies that now it would be evaluated in the Senate where it is likely to face a tough challenge. As expected, the decision of the U.S. House to pass the legislation has been hailed by the large number of immigrants residing in the country who came to United States as children.

The youth immigration bill was passed by the House following a heated debate which lasted for about two hours and ultimately ended with the vote 216-198 with as many as eight Republicans voting in its favor and 38 Democrats opposing it. The decision that was reached by the House on Wednesday night was indeed significant as this was the first time in the ten year long legislative history of the Dream Act that it has been passed.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act or the Dream Act would fulfill the wish of illegal immigrants to attain citizenship in the United States who came to the country below the age of the 16 and have lived here for minimum five years. The act also takes under its purview people who have obtained a high school diploma and have so far displayed ‘good moral character.’ Although opponents of the bill claim that it is nothing but a kind of amnesty for illegal immigrants, proponents of the bill say that legislation would provide legal standing to immigrant youth of U.S.
