Oct 1, (THAINDIAN NEWS)The US federal government imposed some new rules in Thursday which makes offshore drilling safer. It, however, maintained that it is not ready to lift the temporary ban on deep water drilling as yet. The move has received a mixed response as the businessmen feel that the administration is now one step closer to lifting the ban that has been economically devastating bu the environmentalists have opposed the idea and said that several areas in the United States is still not suitable for offshore drilling.
A spokesperson for the White House said that the move by the administration did indeed take it one step closer to lifting the ban and the President does not oppose the offshore exploration of oil. He also added that it (offshore drilling) needs to be done in a more technologically safe and technologically proven way. A spokesperson for the environmentalists group that opposes the idea of lifting the ban on deep water drilling said that the only way to make the oceans and beaches in America safe is to make the new areas completely off limits for drilling.
Erik Milito, a lobbyist for the group that supports the lifting of the ban, said that the new rules would cause a number of delays and complications in the process of getting the permit to drill. He explained that this could hamper the inflow of energy into the country which in turn could affect the employment and job creation aspect of the industry. The temporary ban is expected to be lifted on November 30, but officials have said that they are hoping that it will be lifted earlier.
