UPA government financing ‘dying’ US economy: CPISeptember 21st, 2008 - 9:04 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) The Communist Party of India (CPI) Sunday alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government’s decision to purchase nuclear technology and reactors from the US was meant to finance Washington’s dying economy.Accusing the Manmohan Singh government of misleading the country on the India-US civil nuclear deal and surrendering India’s nuclear autonomy by making multinational commitments, the CPI said: “India has committed to purchase nuclear technology and reactors from the US. That means financing the US economy with billions of rupees.”
The CPI would join other Left and like-minded parties to hold protests on Sep 25, the day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to meet President George W. Bush in Washington and the two are expected to sign the nuclear deal, said CPI deputy general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy after a two-day national executive meeting here.
The CPI asked Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to stop copying the “worst deregulated US financial system” in the country in the wake of the US financial crisis.
“The crisis in the US has thrown up enough lessons but the question is whether Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram are willing to learn the lessons,” the CPI said.
Urging the government to stop privatization of public sector units and banks, the CPI said: “If the American crisis has made little impact on the Indian economy, it is because of the strong presence of the public sector system.”
The CPI national executive strongly criticised Sri Lanka for unleashing “an undeclared war” against ethnic Sri Lankan Tamils and urged the Indian government to use its influence to stop the attacks.
“The Sri Lankan military is indiscriminately conducting aerial bombings on civilian habitats including schools and hospitals. Hundreds of civilians including women and children had been killed or displaced in the indiscriminate attack,” the CPI leader told reporters.
“While this genocide is on across the Palk Straits, the Indian government remains a dumb witness to this tragic events,” the CPI alleged. The party also urged the government to rush food and medicine to the affected people.
The CPI also criticised the US and NATO forces for “armed intrusion” in Pakistan and described it as violation of the sovereignty of Pakistan.
