LONDON (BNO NEWS) – Ian Cameron, the father of British Prime Minister David Cameron, died at a hospital in southern France on Wednesday after suffering a stroke earlier.

“It is with deep regret we can confirm that Ian Cameron died earlier this afternoon,” a Downing Street spokesman said. “He passed away shortly after the Prime Minister arrived at the hospital in France where he was undergoing treatment.”

Ian Cameron, 77, was admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke and heart problems. Prime Minister David Cameron and his brother Alex flew to France on early Wednesday to be at the bedside during their father’s last moments.

“The Prime Minister had found out about his father this morning after receiving a phone call. He had spoken to doctors attending to his father in France and decided that he needed to go across and see him,” the spokesman added.

French authorities provided the British Prime Minister with air transport. It is understood he would probably not have been able to reach his father in time otherwise. David Cameron will stay in France overnight.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said his thoughts and condolences are with David and his family at this time. “Despite the sadness of today, I am very glad that David’s father lived to see him become Prime Minister and that David was able to be at his father’s side at the end.”

Ian Cameron was born with both legs deformed as he had no heels. Despite this disadvantage, he forged a successful career as a stockbroker. He fell ill during the middle of a two-week holiday with his now widow, Mary Cameron.
