MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) — The UK Labour Party on Saturday afternoon elected Ed Miliband as its new leader, narrowly defeating his brother.

A total of five people had campaigned to become the party’s new leader but Ed Miliband and his brother David Miliband were seen as the only candidates with a real chance to win. The results of the party vote were announced in Manchester at around 4.50 p.m. local time.

Four rounds were needed to choose a new leader, as no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the first three rounds. In each round, the candidate with the least votes was eliminated.

Ed Miliband now succeeds former Prime Minister Gorden Brown, who resigned as party leader in wake of an election loss in May.

“Today a new generation has stepped forward to change our party,” Ed Miliband said after the results were announced. “We are united in our mission to transform Labour so that, once again, we stand up for the hardworking majority who play by the rules and want a less divided and more prosperous Britain.”

“I know we have a lot of work to do. The journey starts today.”
