Mumbai, Jan 11 (IANS) Maharashtra’s Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district will be the only one where the forthcoming civic elections would be held in two phases, on Feb 7 and 12, election official said Wednesday.

State election commissioner Neela Satyanarayan said that the decision to hold two-phased elections came following a meeting to discuss the security preparations for the Zilla Parishads(Feb 7) and municipal corporations (Feb 16) elections across the state.

“The Gadchiroli district collector, the district superintendent of police, and state director-general of police emphasised the need to handle elections in the district separately in view of the security situation. In the past, several lives have been lost, including of security personnel while tackling the Maoist challenges,” she said.

The counting of votes in Gadchiroli would be taken up Feb 14, she added.

Regarding the opposition demand to count votes of 27 ZPs and 10 municipal corporation simultaneously, she said a decision would be taken by Jan 15.
