Tripura CPI-M cancels mass rally, mourns SurjeetAugust 1st, 2008 - 9:58 pm ICT by IANS
Agartala, Aug 1 (IANS) The Tripura state committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Friday cancelled a mass rally scheduled here Sunday in view of the death of veteran Marxist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet. “Silent condolence rallies would be held Sunday across Tripura to pay tributes to the departed communist leader, who died in New Delhi Friday after a protracted illness,” said Baidyanath Majumder, secretary of the state unit of CPI-M.
The rally was scheduled to be held as part of the 19th state conference of the CPI-M Tripura state committee, and among the those scheduled to attend were party general secretary Prakash Karat and the chief ministers of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura.
Majumder said the party, as a mark of respect to the veteran leader, has also cancelled a cultural festival scheduled as part of the state conference.
Majumder said: “All top party leaders, including Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, held an emergency meeting Friday afternoon and expressed profound grief over the death of the nonagenarian Marxist leader.”
Sarkar, also a politburo member, will represent the state unit of CPI-M in Surjeet’s cremation ceremony in New Delhi Sunday.
